1. Overview
Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa Chenpoi Phodrang (Palace of Great Bliss), is one of Bhutan’s most magnificent and historically significant fortresses. Located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, it is about a 2-hour drive from Thimphu. This architectural marvel served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and continues to play a vital role in religious and administrative activities. It is also the winter residence of Bhutan’s central monastic body.

- Constructed in 1637–38 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan
