2. History

  1. Druk Wangditse Lhakhang was founded in 1715 by the 8th Druk Desi, Druk Rabgye.
  2. “Wangditse” means “Peak of Conquest” in Dzongkha.
  3. It was once the seat of power for Bhutan’s religious and political elite.
  4. The temple was heavily damaged during the 2011 Himalayan earthquake.
  5. Restoration was completed in 2020, using historical records and old drawings.
  6. Original mural references were taken from 1783 British artist Samuel Davis.
  7. The main chapel houses a large copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha.
  8. Side altars honor Mañjuśrī (wisdom) and Avalokiteśvara (compassion).
