Tango Monastery

Tango Monastery (also known as Tango Goemba) is one of the most revered monastic institutions in Bhutan, located about 14 kilometers north of Thimphu. 2. History

  1. Founded in the 13th century by Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa.
  2. The current structure was built in 1688 by the 4th Temporal Ruler of Bhutan, Tenzin Rabgye.
  3. “Tango” translates to “horse head,” referencing the wrathful deity Hayagriva.
  4. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal meditated near the site in 1616.
  5. The monastery belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Buddhism.
  6. It houses the National Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies.
  7. Tango is considered the spiritual seat of the Gyalse Rinpoche, the reincarnation of Zhabdrung.
